Sorting and deleting

How does deleting work?

Open a month and swipe. Swipe left to mark a photo or video for deleting, and right to keep it. Tap to skip one you're not sure about.

Nothing is deleted while you swipe. When you're ready, the app shows how many photos and videos you marked and about how much space they take. Tap Delete, iOS asks you to confirm, and they move to Recently Deleted. Changed your mind about one before deleting? Go back to it in the month and swipe it the other way.

I deleted something by mistake. Can I get it back?

Yes, for 30 days. Open the Photos app, scroll down to Utilities and tap Recently Deleted. Select the item and tap Recover. Your iPhone may ask for Face ID or your passcode to open the album.

After 30 days, or if you empty Recently Deleted, iOS removes items for good and they can't be recovered.

Why didn't my storage go up right after deleting?

Deleted items stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days, so they still take up space until then. To get the space back now, open Recently Deleted in the Photos app and delete them there. If you use iCloud Photos, you get the space in iCloud back at the same time.

I swiped the wrong way. How do I undo?

Tap the undo button at the bottom of the screen. You can undo several swipes in a row. You can also go back to any photo in the month and swipe it again.

Does deleting here also delete from iCloud?

If you use iCloud Photos, yes. Your library is the same on all your devices, so an item you delete on your iPhone is also deleted from iCloud and your other devices. It goes to Recently Deleted everywhere for 30 days first.

Using the app

How do Live Photos work?

Press and hold a Live Photo to play it, just like in the Photos app. Keeping or deleting a Live Photo keeps or deletes the whole thing, picture and motion together. You can also filter a month to show only Live Photos.

How do reminders work?

You can get a reminder every week or every month, on the day you pick, with a note about your pace. Reminders are created on your iPhone; nothing is sent from a server.

To change or turn them off, open the app's Settings. If you don't get reminders, check that notifications for the app are allowed in Settings > Notifications on your iPhone.

The app only shows some of my photos.

You may have given the app access to selected photos only. To change this, open Settings on your iPhone, go to Privacy & Security > Photos, choose FreeUp and pick Full Access.

Also check whether a filter is on in the app, for example one that shows only videos or only screenshots.

Is there a limit on how many photos I can swipe?

No. Swiping is unlimited and free, with no daily cap and no waiting between months. There are no ads.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens on your iPhone, and your photos and videos never leave it. The app may send anonymous usage and crash data to help us improve it, but never photos, file names, locations or personal data. The Privacy Policy has the details.

Purchases and tips

What's free, and what costs money?

Everything in the app is free: swiping, undo, filters, deleting, albums, badges and your pace, with no limits. Tips are optional and don't unlock anything.

How do I get a refund?

Apple handles all payments, so refunds are requested from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. We can't issue refunds ourselves, because we never see your payment.

I left a tip but the app still asks.

The app asks rarely, and not again for a long time after you tip. If it asked again soon after a tip, please let us know, along with your iPhone model and the app version from Settings.

Still need help?

Please contact us through the FreeUp page on the App Store. It helps if you include your iPhone model, your iOS version and the app version (in the app's Settings).
